5 COMMON DENTAL PROBLEMS IN DOGS AND CATS

Posted by Charmaine Chantal Young on

It’s wonderful how our pets are living longer!  Thanks to better medical treatments, diagnostic tools and advanced nutrition our pets are healthier and happier for longer .

With longer lives come more cases of dental diseases unfortunately. In fact, some of the severe medical problems reported in veterinary hospitals are dental problems.  We are responsible to ensure our pets have good dental health.

Puppies have 28 baby teeth that erupt as early as four weeks of age. Then the 42 adult teeth make their appearance from around four months of age.

Kittens have 26 baby teeth at three weeks young and 30 adult teeth from three to four months of age.

Common Pet Dental Care Problems

1.  Periodontal Disease

This is the most common problem in dogs, especially smaller breeds, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society.  80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease with periodontal disease.

2.  Broken Teeth

Broken teeth are another common problem. This is especially true for outdoor dogs and cats and generally caused by aggressive chewing on something hard. Many times, it may be even be due to a commercially available chew toy. Approximately 28% of cats can develop painful lesions during their lifetime.

3.  Plaque

Similarly to their human owners, our pets get plaque and tartar build-up. Plaque forms when food and bacteria collect along the gum line. If the plaque is not removed, it combines with the minerals in saliva, creating tartar (or calculus) within three to five days after it forms.

4.  Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the tartar causing gums to become inflamed causing reddening of the gums next to the teeth. This contributes to bad breath with red and inflamed gums. You can learn more about these signs from your local veterinarian.

5.  Tartar Build-up

Tartar build-up can cause pockets around the teeth causing bacteria to build up. This bacterial build-up may cause irreversible damage if not caught early and can lead to loose teeth, bone loss and infection. This condition is known as periodontal disease.

If the build-up of bacteria enters the bloodstream, this can cause endocarditis (infection of the heart valves) or kidney infection. With proper care from your veterinarian, the disease can be slowed or stopped.

The old days of just pulling teeth are becoming a thing of the past. As dental care procedures are becoming more sophisticated and new products being developed, Plaque Off Animal is recommended by veterinarians every time, an all-natural powder that works for bleeding gums, bad breath and plaque and tartar removal.

Make an appointment with your veterinarian to ensure your pet’s teeth are clean and healthy.
